Europa League, Group stage: TSG 1899 Hoffenheim – Slovan Liberec 5:0

Derek OBrien
In the third round of the group stage, Slovan visited Hoffeinheim, who had not lost in the Europa League this year. Liberec were without several regulars due to COVID-19 positive tests and, as expected, Hoffeinheim held the ball from the beginning and patiently created chances. Slovan were unable to stop the onslaught of the German team, conceded five times and returned home without any points.

Commentary

Bebou got the first chance - the pass was blocked and Hasalík caught the ball in his arms. In the seventh minute, after Rudy's pass, Klauss appeared in the area and Hasalík prevented him from scoring with a great save, throwing himself under his feet in time. In the 12th minute, Hasalík punched the ball away and prevented Gaćinović from scoring into the empty net. A moment later, Baumgartner reached for a shot, but his attempt flew wide of the left post. Another lapse by the Liberec defence was solved by the young goalkeeper in the 16th minute, when he prevented Gaćinović from capitalizing.

Slovan tried to bravely resist, but were unable to stem the tide. Hoffeinheim held the ball and created chances while the Czech visitors waited for the possibility of breaks. In the 22nd minute, the German side scored their first goal. Kačaraba slipped and slithered in the wet grass - his usual bursts of speed were nowhere to be seen today. Seven minutes later, the score was quickly 2-0 for the home team, as Skov’s shot sailed just in front of Hasalík and Munas Dabbur directed the ball into the goal.

The second half of the match started just like the first, with Hoffenheim in firm possession of the ball. In the 56th minute, Slovan earned their first corner of the match but Mara, who was waiting at the far post, could not convert. In the 59th minute, Florian Grillitsch sent a jumping shot from a distance, it flew between Kačarab's legs, Hasalík could not react in time and it was 3-0 for Hoffenheim. The German footballers played conservatively, but still managed another goal in the 71st minute. Hasalík was able to push Baumgartner's pass just in front of him, where Sargis Adamyan was waiting. He chose the unguarded side of the goal and increased the difference to four goals.

After a series of reflections and non-emphasis in front the Liberec goal, Sargis Adamyan got another chance and again made good to give Hoffenheim a commanding 5-0 lead. In the 85th minute, Hasalík prevented another goal with a great run, forcing Belfodil's shot to go off target. Slovan failed to create a chance and with a noticeably weakened lineup succumbed to Hoffeinheim by five goals.
