Europa League, Q2: Riteriai – Slovan Liberec 1:5

Slovan competed with the Lithuanian team FK Riteriai in the second round of the Europa League. From the beginning of the match we were the better team, building a 2-0 lead by the 20-minute mark. The only complication was the 2-1 goal, which made things nervous for a while. However, in the last 10 minutes Slovan confirmed their role as the favourite and with three goals recorded a 5-1 victory. With that, they can rejoice in advancing to the third round of the Europa League!

Commentary

The first sign of a chance for Slovan came to Mosquera in the 2nd minute, with his shot centred by Simaitis on a corner kick. The home side worked hard to get through the middle and as a result, had a good chance of getting one back as Pešek tried lifting the ball over the keeper. Slovan were the more active team from the beginning and did not give the Lithuanian team much space to operate. In the 11th minute, Koscelník was fouled in the area, which resulted in a penalty. The ball was set by Kamso Mara, who sent the goalkeeper to the other side and opened the scoring.

Another goal came in the 20th minute. Pešek found Jakub Hromada approaching through a great low pass and he fired from the edge of the box inconspicuously to the left post. Shortly thereafter Liberec put the ball into the net for a third time, but the referees did not allow it. Mosquera stretched out from behind the lime and his attempt bounced off the crossbar about a meter behind the goal line and then out, and so the scoreline remained 2-0. Traoré shot at the other end of the pitch, but his attempt sailed away from Nguyen's goal. At the end of the half, there was an opportunity for the home side as Lezama challenged Nguyen, who didn't have much trouble with his weak shot.

At the beginning of the second half, Slovan were in control of the ball, forcing Riteriai to defend more. In the 60th minute, there was almost a goal. Due to the unfavourable weather conditions, the ball sailed in the air and Nguyen had a lot of work to redirect it at least to the corner. After the ball was shot in from the left corner, Ángel Lezama was on his own in the home side's penalty area and should have scored but missed, probably due to lack of concentration. Riteriai began to attack more after the goal and Slovan looked nervous, with Filipavičius firing dangerously. His attempt flew just wide of the left post.

Seven minutes before full time, there was at least a partial reassurance in the form of Michael Rabušic's goal. After a foul on Mosquer, Pešek centred and our attacker relaxed beautifully and increased the Slovan lead with a perfectly placed header to make it 3-1. In the 88th minute, the agile Rabušic was fouled in the area and another penalty was imposed in favour of our team. This time Júsuf Hilal too it, and just like Mara did not hesitate in the first half and increased the lead to three goals. With the win seemingly safe in hand, Jan Matoušek nonetheless attacked and managed to beat the goalkeeper with a low shot to make the final scoreline 5-1. With that result, Slovan advance to the third preliminary round of the Europa League!
