Championship group, Round 4: FC Slovan Liberec – FC Viktoria Plzeň 0:2

Derek OBrien
Slovan started their last home game in the championship group on Sunday afternoon. This time they hosted Viktoria Pilsen, who would definitely lose the chance of the title in case of any hesitation. The Blue and White, especially in the first half, had a lot of chances, but Viktoria were more effective. Hořava gave them the lead in the 8th minute and Hrošovský added an insurance goal on a penalty.

Commentary

On their home pitch, Slovan started well, with plenty of ball control, and threatened in the sixth minute when Petar Musa got his head on a set-up from Matěj Hybš, but his header missed Aleš Hruška’s goal by a couple of feet. Two minutes later, Viktoria got their first chance and managed to score. Tomáš Hořava struck from the edge of the outer box with a perfectly placed shot.

The middle passage of the first half was played at a more lukewarm pace, with neither side really developing anything. Radim Breite tried to get things going in the 27th minute, sending a shot from a respectful distance directly to the middle of the net, where Hruška stood waiting with open arms. And when another dangerous header from Musa from a good position in the center of Potočná did not catch up, the score was still 1-0 after half an hour of play.

Then Musa got to a dangerous header, which missed the goal by inches. Otherwise, Hruška had no chance to save it. Slovan dominated the end of the half. Another long-range blow came from Kamso Mara, but Hruska performed a great shot when he tossed the shot to safety with a tiger jump.

We also entered the second half more actively, but in the first 10 minutes there were no good chances. Referee Pavel Franěk gave out three yellow cards in a span of 15 minutes. Jan Pázler entering the game on the left wing resulted in a good chance to score after a handy shot from the left, but Erik Micovčák couldn’t get it off quickly, and finally the slow shot was stopped easily by Hruška.

At the end of the match, Liberec tried to at least equalize, but the Pilsen defence was very compact and didn't give much chance to our players. Slovan were forced to open the game and risk more. This proved fatal for them in the 98th minute when Oscar was forced to foul a Viktoria player from behind in the area. Patrik Hrošovský stepped up to take the penalty and calmly scored. The Pilsen team, after winning 2-0, took all three points from North Bohemia.
